General Information
Field Lacrosse
in the Lower Mainland is played from September to April,
with the majority of games played on Sundays. It is
played on natural grass or "field turf" fields 110 yards
long by 60 yards wide, with weekday practices usually held
on all-weather (gravel) fields.
Unlike
indoor ("box") lacrosse, there are 10 players per side:
a
goalkeeper, three
defenders
(or “big-sticks”) because
of their use of longer 5' sticks), three midfielders (or “middies”), and
three attacker (or "attacks"). The defence
must always have four players on their side of center,
usually the goalie and three defenders
and the attack must always have three players on the
opposite side of center. As in box lacrosse, the intent is to score a
goal into a net (6’ wide
x 6’ tall x 7’ deep), line changes
occur “on the fly” and a number of the infractions (called
“fouls”) are similar to the “penalties” in box lacrosse.
Typically,
evaluations start in late August/early September, with
players then divided up into 3 tiers based on calibre of
play: Tier I (equivalent of A box lacrosse), Tier II
(equivalent of B) and Tier III (equivalent of C).
Each calibre competes for the League Championship, with
eligible Tier I & Tier II teams going on to compete in the
Provincial Championships. Players must be properly
registered (including proper releases from field lacrosse
associations outside of Surrey and White Rock) and must have
played in at least 50% of league games to be eligible for
the Provincial Championships.

Note that the registration fee
does not include the purchase of jersey and shorts,
which together cost approximately $95.00 and will be due and
collected during tryouts. Uniforms and the player's
number belong to the player for their entire membership with
SFFLA. Specific number requests will be accommodated
as best as possible, but alternatives should be considered
by first-time registrants in case their preferred number is
already taken. Replacement jerseys and shorts can be
ordered through the Team Manager as the player outgrows,
loses or damages his/her existing jersey and/or shorts for a
nominal fee.
It is
imperative that players remember to maintain in good
condition and bring their jersey and shorts to
all games (as the team does not carry spares), as this
brings a professional look to the team and to South Fraser
Field Lacrosse. Players must also remember to check their equipment and
sticks before leaving for games or practices to ensure all
are in good working order and accounted for in their bag.
